I am only a few hours into the game, but I would like to share my initial impressions so far. I will be updating this review once I am completely finished with the game. Let's get started:

First of all, please note that the "top critics" have all been giving disputing scores on this game (IGN - 7, Gamespot - 8.5, etc). I am pointing this out because so many gamers these days are number slaves. True, there are awful and fantastic games out there, but some games are caught in between; these games are difficult to judge by a number system, and so we need to be careful how to approach them. In the case of Shadows, a number cannot do it justice.

This game is a homage to old school grindfest/horror B movies. It's over-the-top, and it's vulgar. But this game does not bank on these factors alone. The gameplay, atmosphere, and pacing are near perfect in this game. The gameplay resembles RE4, but it is smoother. You are able to dodge enemy attacks quite easily and sprinting out of danger is straightforward. Some reviewers have complaints regarding the shooting. I have no idea where they are coming from because in the options you can change both the AIMING and CAMERA sensitivities. And yes, you have to try to aim for headshots. It is not a game where you spam the gun and expect great results. Please take aim. The atmosphere is another big plus for me. Although the world is quite linear, the overall sense of macabre, dread, and quirkiness flows well in this game. From books read out loud that explains the history of a boss fight you encountered to a cart full of decomposing corpses and dismembered body parts, this game defines itself with a sick style. Additionally, the music in this game is composed by Silent Hill's Yamaoko. It truely fleshes out the dark tone of the atmosphere, and I definately had nostalgia. Simply put, this game has a strong identity and is not ashamed of showing it. Lastly, the pacing of the game is also top-notch. Going from fight to fight is addictive because new variables and challenges are always being thrown into the mix. You need to be quick thinking and have a steady aim if you want to get out alive in these situations. And of course, dispersed within these segments, there are a steady number of cut-scenes and banter between Johnson and Garcia that will push things along.

    Other thoughts:

-Graphics are good. They are not the best, but they serve the game well enough and are artistically great
-This is a very violent and vulgar game. Nudity is also included.
-There are many juvenile "dick jokes" and whatnot, but I believe it's critical that they are there. This game does not take itself seriously, and it wants you to know.

I've read many reviews regarding this game, and a lot of people were turned off by its juvenile attempts at humor. But please do not let that scare you off. Don't feel that you are too "mature" or "serious" to enjoy a game and let the game's intentional style cloud your judgement. I am a PhD student in the biomedical sciences. If a "nerdy bookworm" like me is able to appreciate the crudeness of the game (perhaps it's appealing to my inner 12 year old), then I believe many people will also be able to enjoy it. Come into this game with an open mind, and you will not leave dissapointed.

    UPDATE:

I just finished the game. I clocked in at 9 hours and 11 minutes at the final save point of the game. This time does not include replaying certain sequences over due to death. Also, I did not rush though the game; I played at a moderate pace searching for upgrades and observing the environments along the way. The game consists of 5 acts with several chapters per act.

    Post-game thoughts:

-Fantastic game overall, although there were several spikes in difficulty that lead to some frustrating/cheap deaths
-Using the correct weapons when there were large mixtures of enemies was quite satisfying because the game does not hold your hand stating which weapons will take down which monsters most effeciently
-Puzzles were relatively easy to solve, and they were nice breakups to the shooting
-Upgrade system is good, constant awards and light RPG elements
-Ending was funny, poignant, exciting, completely crazy - hopefully there will be a sequel

Previously, I stated that the controls were very fluid. I still agree for the most part; however, there were parts during the game that I wished the controls were tighter.

Ultimately, this is a great game. I wish there was a New Game+ mode because it is well worth it to go through it again.

It's a fantastic game the graphics have aged extremely well and for a used game it was well looked after, no scratches at all. The dialogue is funny and the character it easy to like. The game overall is well worth a try my only criticism would be that the controls can be a little wonky at times and it can get frustrating to have to control the camera during a fight but I'm sure I'll get used to it, the game is worth it.

It's Desperado meets Evil Dead 2, with the gameplay of Resident Evil 4 and the humor of No More Heroes.
If that sounds good to you, then you'll enjoy this game.

    Story: 8/10
The Lord of the Underworld kidnaps the girlfriend of demon slayer, Garcia Hotspur (Yeah, that is his name) and drags her to hell. Garcia and his floating skull buddy, Johnson, venture into hell to rescue Paula. Johnson was a demon a long time ago, but now he has the ability to transform into different upgradeable phallic weapons and serves as Garcia's portable arsenal. Garcia ventures through the treacherous levels of hell to try and save the woman he loves. This ends up being pretty entertaining because hell is a really quirky place. Eyeball chomping babies guard doors, braying goat heads light up levels, and some levels are actually giant naked women.

    Gameplay: 8/10
This is a 3rd Person action adventure game with an over the shoulder camera. The aiming is quite touchy, but you can adjust the camera and cursor speeds on the Options Menu. I'd recommend slowing it down just a bit because it's tough to pull of head shots. Garcia and run, dive roll, do a quick 180 turn, use an arsenal of weapons, and shoot light out of his Johnson. In hell, darkness actually drains your health and makes demons invincible. But one shot of Garcia's Johnson on a mounted goat head, and the room becomes illuminated. The darkness clings to some enemies, making them invulnerable, but a blast of Johnson's light removes the darkness. Once the demons are vulnerable, they can be attacked with a melee weapon, a pistol, a shotgun, a machine gun, or a grenade launcher. Of course these have colorful names like Hot Boner or Big Boner... because the guns shoot bones. You can upgrade your weapons by finding Gems and there is a traveling merchant that appears in the game. Here, you can cash in white gems for health potions (booze), ammo, or gun upgrades.

There are typical zombies and larger sub bosses that all take a bit of strategy to kill. You may have to shoot them with light to expose a weak point, then attack the weak point as rapidly as possible to inflict the maximum amount of damage. And there are some pretty large boss battles, which are pretty fun.

    Levels: 7/10
The levels are hit or miss. Throughout most of the game, you run through gore drenched towns and attack zombies, similar to recent Resident Evil games. The difference here is the comedy. Johnson and Garcia are pretty funny guys and they'll have you laughing from time to time. So these levels are entertaining. There are some levels similar to the old school 2D side scrolling shooters where Garcia looks like a paper doll and floats to the right and you have to shoot enemies. These are pretty bad. There is a bit of trial and error here and the bullets come from the tip of Garcia's gun, instead of the base. This makes it impossible to shoot demons that get too close to him. If a demon touches Garcia, he rapidly takes damage and will die in 2 seconds. This is frustrating because demons jump out of the top, side, and bottom of the screen and if you get two on you, you are dead.

The checkpoints are also not in the best areas. If you die at a boss, you'll respawn down a hallway and have to go through all of the unskippable cutscenes again. This can get really annoying if you die a few times in the same spot. I'm shocked that there are so few checkpoints at the beginning of the Boss Fights.

    Graphics: 6/10
The game looks about 3 or 4 years old. But it can get away with this because it's a parody of a B-Horror film which are notoriously low budget.

    Sound: 9/10
The music is pretty cool and the voice acting is really entertaining. Garcia and Johnson will keep you laughing.

    Replay Value: 3/10
The replay value is limited. There are 3 difficulty levels, but if you replay the game, you don't get to keep your weapons and the cutscenes are not skippable. To make matters worse, you've heard all of the jokes already.

    Maturity: Adults
Gore, nudity, swearing, violence, demons, hell, torture... No kid should play this. It's an interactive gore drenched B-Horror Film with boobs and corpses... and occasionally corpses with boobs.

    Overall: 7.5/10
This is a fun game that will take you about 8 hours to finish. You will laugh if you like crude humor or quirky heroes. You'll enjoy the game if you like the Resident Evil style shooters. This game would have been much better if some of the gameplay mechanics were brought up to current standards.

Buy it if you love stuff like Evil Dead 2.
Buy it if you like Suda 51 (No More Heroes)
Buy it if you are a necropheliac... naked corpses are everywhere!
Rent it if you have about 8 hours to finish the campaign.
Rent it if you just want to blow through the campaign. There are no multiplayer modes and replay value is limited.
Avoid it if you don't like d*ck jokes or crude humor.
Avoid it if you are a graphics snob.
Avoid it if you don't like the Resident Evil style gameplay.

If you liked the humor here and have a Wii, try No More Heroes 1 and 2.
If you like the gameplay, check out Resident Evil 5, Dead Space 1 or 2, and Left 4 Dead 2.

One of the most fun games I've ever played. I'm not really a hard core gamer, but over my many years I've played lots of them and this is the most fun and at times irritating games I've ever played. Its rude, intense, funny, annoying and so many other things. For really good gamers it might be a bit easy at times, but for me on medium its a pretty good challenge and not too difficult. If there is a downfall, it is the uneven level of difficulty. Some levels and enemies are too easy and some bosses and parts have taken so long to beat. I guess some of that is the good challenge that makes a good game.

Some if it is just annoying though. Like the "instant death" you get when that crazy woman demon catches up to you. Finally made it, but it was just annoying. And the most annoying part was the "big boner" level. Not 1 or 2, but 3! the second part was so hard for me that I almost quit and sold the game. I had it up on ebay and then cancelled it and I'm glad I did. To add to some of the frustration, every time you die you have to go through some of the dialogue and time consuming cut-scenes. But this to me is still a 5 star game. The combat and creative gameplay just make it great and so much fun. The mix of ways to kill the demons and enemies is very rewarding and doesn't seem to get old. The darkness adds a unique level of puzzles and ways to get out of a situation. The guns and upgrades are great and make for a lot of the creativity.

This is just a great game and if you can deal with the juvenile anatomical humor and the quest to be as gross and sick as possible, grab this game. The graphics and visuals are a bit dated, but I don't care at all. I'd rather have the more time spent with the creativity of the game than spending insane hours on graphics. I also don't care about the technical details of a few errors and don't give a !$*@ about screen tearing or really even know what it is. The environment is really well done and looks great for what it is.

Oh yeah, the sound and music is excellent. Not much replay value as they should have done a game+ or something like that. Probably a 4 or 4.5 star game, but what it does give is great gaming and a lot of fun.

This will be brief and to the point as I need to get back to playing the game. Longtime gamers capable of intelligent thought will get everything they need to know out of this review. I'm mostly doing this to counter the 2-star review from the guy that can't appreciate a game if it borrows something from another game. News flash: all games nowadays borrow from previous games. It's inevitable. You shouldn't be criticizing a game for borrowing elements from other games, you should be determining whether or not those elements come together in a way that is awesome and intriguing.

    Things I've noticed
    + I'm laughing a lot
+ Feels like a Mikami game (Resident Evil 4, God Hand) perfectly blended with a Suda game (Killer 7, No More Heroes)
+ Soundtrack is pretty damn great (done by Akira Yamaoka who you may recognize as the composer for the Silent Hill games)
+ Gunplay feels excellent, headshots are rewarding and encouraged
+ Garcia is agile, doesn't control like a tank
+ Upgrade system is quick and painless, adds just a touch of an RPG feel to the game
+ There's a merchant that allows you to buy ammo, drinks, and weapon upgrades
+ NO REGENERATING HEALTH (thank god)
+ Campy in the best possible way
    + Spot-on voice acting
+ Lots of nice little touches here and there
    - Unreal Engine is as bad as it usually is, resulting in lots of texture pop-in, screen-tearing, etc. However, they did the best they could to make this game one of the most colorful Unreal games right up there with Enslaved.
    - Sometimes weapon switching isn't as responsive as it should be, but this is likely something to do with the engine or the shoddy d-pad on the 360 controller.

Some closing thoughts: Shadows is roughly 10-11 hours long, I imagine it might take you a bit longer depending on how much you die and how much time you spend looking for gems and ammo. Not exactly a difficult game if you've played any of Mikami's previous games. I'm guessing EA had something to do with that. Just play the game on hard and all is remedied, you can even unlock the 'Satanic Hell' mode this way.

This game is absolutely worth your money. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have in the comments and I'll answer.
