Some Avengers stories can easily slip under the radar for various reasons. Lionheart of Avalon, written by Chuck Austen, is one such storyline. It starts off with the Avengers battling the Wrecking Crew in England, but takes a tragic turn that eventually sees the introduction of a new Captain Britain.
While Austen is most infamously known for his run on Uncanny X-Men (which received immense fan backlash), his five-part storyline for Avengers is actually pretty solid. The new Captain Britain - Kelsey Leigh - is a fascinating addition to the Avengers and is given a quite compelling character arc. The artwork by Olivier Coipel and Sean Chen is surprisingly first-rate and Austen gives some distinct characterisations to each Avenger. He also handles the storyline's grief and trauma very well and helps humanise the Avengers by showing how not all their fights end in clear-cut victories.
However, Austen does admittedly over-egg Kelsey's whole inner conflict, and the fact that she's already horribly scarred before becoming Captain Britain is also pretty outdated. But despite its flaws, Lionheart of Avalon is a generally underrated and occasionally gut-punching storyline that shows what Austen could have brought to the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
