    The Atom is all to often overlooked for a character that is so powerful. This was a great read, i am still a Ray Palmer fan myself, but i still loved the story.

    When Gail Simone is on form -Birds of Prey- she is simply one of the best writers of mainstream superheroes in the business and here she is on form introducing the new Atom.

    What we have is this-

    A likeable young Chinese professor of Physics about to take up his post in a rather odd university town; a distinctive and often eccentric (this is a good thing) supporting cast; micro-human invaders living -but that would be telling- with an annoying manner of speaking that turns out to be relevant to the plot; a serial killer with the same powers as the Atom; the return of a villain from the first series of Swamp Thing; a giant naked woman; and lots more.

    The artist is comic legend John Byrne, which is either a plus, a negative, or a so what. I lean towards the first of these even if he doesn't know what a rat really looks like, unless this is a DC Universe rat which might also explain why a dog's paws look vaguely hand-like. Whatever, he is a good superhero artist.

    The result: a lot of superhero fun. I've already ordered volume 2.

    I'm going to have to reread this one sometime. First impression - so, so. I'm a diehard Gil Kane fan and a silver age Atom fan and this will take some getting used to, at least until Ray Palmer gets back. And make no mistake about it, Ray Palmer will be back. Maybe it won't be for a couple of years until DC decides to pull another one of it's "Crisis" events and kill off some other "minor" characters and return Ray, along with Blue Beetle and who knows who else...but Ray will be back. In the meantime, as the saying goes.."the jury's out on this one." As for the rating, I would give this a 2 1/2, not a 3, but there are'nt any 1/2 ratings.

    This book could have been a lot better. For as much as he's hyped, John Byrne killed enjoyment for me. The art just wasn't that good. The volume as a whole is mediocre. I don't think I will be picking up volume 2.
